Victoria and the changing British monarchy

From Kensington to the throne

Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in 1819 and was educated at home. She became queen in 1837, aged 18, after William IV died without a surviving legitimate child. Her early years on the throne involved learning the limits and influence of a constitutional monarch, first with guidance from Prime Minister Lord Melbourne.

Albert and public projects

She married Prince Albert in 1840, and the couple had nine children. Albert encouraged arts, science and industry, notably through the Great Exhibition of 1851. After his death in 1861, Victoria withdrew from many public appearances, though she continued official correspondence and meetings; her seclusion drew criticism before she resumed more public duties.

Empire and constitutional change

Victoria became Empress of India in 1877, a title tied to Britain’s expanding empire. At home, reform acts during her reign broadened the electorate while direct political power moved further from the sovereign. Her long reign ended in 1901; its association with industrial growth and empire remains part of a complex historical legacy.
