Sergey Brin: from a university experiment to Google
A research partnership
After his family left the Soviet Union, Sergey Brin studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Maryland and then pursued graduate work at Stanford. There he met Larry Page. Their shared interest in finding useful information on the growing web became a research project rather than a conventional course assignment.
Building a search company
Brin and Page developed a search engine that assessed pages through links between them. The project was first called Backrub and later Google. An early investment in 1998 helped them turn the university experiment into a company; the move into a garage marked the beginning of an operation that would reach far beyond campus.
A changing leadership role
As Google expanded into a major technology company, Brin held senior roles alongside Page. In 2015 the business was reorganized under the new parent company Alphabet, with Brin as its president. Both founders stepped back from day-to-day executive roles in 2019, a shift that separated their continuing association with the company from its daily management.
