Phil Collins: from Genesis drummer to solo hitmaker
Behind the Genesis drum kit
Phil Collins joined Genesis as its drummer in 1970. When the group changed singers in the mid-1970s, he became its lead vocalist as well. His move from rhythm section to frontman helped carry Genesis from progressive rock into a broader pop audience.
A parallel solo career
Collins released Face Value in 1981 and continued making solo albums while working with Genesis. No Jacket Required became a major mid-1980s success. The two careers were parallel rather than a simple departure from the band, giving his voice a prominent place on both group and solo recordings.
Film music and recognition
Beyond the concert stage, Collins worked on the music for Disney’s Tarzan, and You’ll Be in My Heart won an Academy Award. Genesis entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, which recognizes Collins as a member. His career thus spans band performance, solo pop and film composition.
