Christian Bale: an early breakthrough and a varied screen career
A leading role while still a teenager
Christian Bale’s prominent early role came in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun in 1987, when he was 13. Rather than remain identified with that performance, he continued taking parts across genres. American Psycho in 2000 showed a much darker screen persona.
Batman and work beyond the franchise
Christopher Nolan cast Bale as Bruce Wayne in a Batman trilogy beginning with Batman Begins. Between those films, Bale also appeared in The Prestige and 3:10 to Yuma. The contrast between a recurring blockbuster role and separate dramatic projects became a defining pattern of his career.
Recognition for later character roles
Bale played Dicky Eklund in The Fighter and later appeared in American Hustle, The Big Short and Vice. The Golden Globes records wins for The Fighter and Vice, showing recognition across different kinds of character work. Ford v Ferrari subsequently placed him in a racing drama as Ken Miles.
