The Weeknd’s path from mixtapes to global pop
An early independent audience
Abel Tesfaye built an audience as the Weeknd with three mixtapes released in 2011, beginning with House of Balloons. The recordings preceded Trilogy, the 2012 collection that gathered his early material for a wider release. Kiss Land followed in 2013 as his first studio album, marking a move from online discovery toward a conventional album career.
Pop breakthrough
Beauty Behind the Madness arrived in 2015 with the singles Can’t Feel My Face and The Hills. Starboy followed in 2016 and included a collaboration with Daft Punk on its title track. These records broadened his audience while retaining the theatrical sound and imagery associated with his early work. His catalogue moved across R&B, electronic production and mainstream pop.
A new streaming scale
After Hours appeared in 2020 and included Blinding Lights; Dawn FM followed in 2022. In March 2023 Guinness World Records recorded Tesfaye as the first artist to reach 100 million monthly Spotify listeners. That dated record documents the reach of the later releases, rather than defining his entire career by a changing streaming statistic.
