Paul Mescal: stage training, television breakthrough and film roles
Learning the craft in Dublin
Mescal trained at The Lir Academy in Dublin while also playing Gaelic football. After graduating in 2017, he began building a stage career, including a leading role in The Great Gatsby at the Gate Theatre. Theatre gave him a professional foundation before television brought him a much wider audience.
Normal People changes his reach
His portrayal of Connell in the 2020 television adaptation of Normal People became his breakthrough role. The intimate series put his work before viewers far beyond Irish theatre. Rather than stay within one medium, he continued moving between screen projects and live performance as his career developed.
Film and a return to the stage
Mescal earned an Academy Award nomination for playing a father in Aftersun. In London he took on Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and won an Olivier Award for the performance. Later film work included Gladiator II and Hamnet, extending a career built across television, film and theatre.
