Julianne Moore: a career across film and television
Building a film career
Moore’s film credits in the 1990s ranged from Robert Altman’s ensemble drama Short Cuts (1993) to the studio sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). Boogie Nights, also released in 1997, showed her in a very different kind of production. The varied roles established a screen career that was not confined to one genre or scale.
Drama and television
She appeared in The End of the Affair (1999), Far from Heaven (2002) and The Hours (2002), then continued working with filmmakers including Alfonso Cuarón and Todd Haynes. On television, her portrayal of Sarah Palin in Game Change (2012) earned an Emmy. The sequence shows how film and television remained parallel parts of her work.
Later collaborations
Moore starred in Still Alice (2014), a drama about a woman facing Alzheimer’s disease. Cannes lists her in David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars (2014), Haynes’s Wonderstruck (2017) and May December (2023). Those festival credits extend a long-running pattern of moving between independent dramas and larger commercial releases.
