Albino Luciani’s path to the brief pontificate of John Paul I

Teaching and diocesan work

Born Albino Luciani in 1912, the future John Paul I entered seminary as a boy and was ordained a priest in 1935. He later taught in the Belluno seminary, earned a doctorate in theology and held administrative posts in the diocese. Education and catechesis remained visible parts of his clerical career.

Bishop, patriarch and cardinal

Pope John XXIII named Luciani bishop of Vittorio Veneto in 1958. As bishop he attended the sessions of the Second Vatican Council. Paul VI appointed him patriarch of Venice in 1969 and made him a cardinal in 1973, placing him among the senior figures of the Italian church before the 1978 conclave.

A pontificate measured in weeks

The conclave elected Luciani pope on 26 August 1978, and he took the name John Paul I. His formal inauguration followed on 3 September. He died on 28 September of the same year. The short tenure limits any account of his papacy: the longer documented career is the one he built before Rome.
