Frances McDormand: a career across film, television and stage
From training to the Coens’ first film
McDormand studied theater at Bethany College and Yale before making her film debut in Blood Simple (1984), Joel and Ethan Coen’s first feature. She continued to work with the brothers while building a wider film career. Her lead performance in Fargo (1996) became an early defining role.
Work across screens and stage
Her films outside the Coen collaborations included Almost Famous (2000) and North Country (2005). On Broadway, she returned after a long absence for The Country Girl in 2008 and won a Tony for Good People in 2011. The miniseries Olive Kitteridge (2014) gave her a substantial television lead.
Later film roles
McDormand took the central roles in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland (2020). Her later credits also include The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) and Women Talking (2022). These projects extended a career that had long moved between independent film, major awards productions and other media.
