David Bowie: reinvention as an artistic method
The first signals from space
“Space Oddity” brought Bowie wider notice in 1969. Three years later, the Ziggy Stardust album and stage character joined songs, costume and performance into a single artistic world. Rather than settling into one rock identity, Bowie made changing identities part of the work itself.
A career of changing sounds
After the glam-rock breakthrough, Bowie moved through soul-influenced records and experimental work. His music and visual presentation kept shifting, a pattern the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame emphasizes in its account of his fifty-year career. The hall inducted him in 1996.
A final album with its own afterlife
Bowie returned to recording with The Next Day in 2013 and released Blackstar in 2016. The Recording Academy documents five Grammy wins for Blackstar at the 2017 ceremony, including Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song. Those awards recognized a late work rather than merely his earlier reputation.
