Dave Grohl: from Nirvana’s drums to Foo Fighters
A drummer in a defining band
Dave Grohl became widely known as the drummer of Nirvana. The band’s place in rock history was recognized with its induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That chapter established him before he became the singer and guitarist most closely associated with his later group.
Building Foo Fighters
After Nirvana, Grohl formed Foo Fighters in 1994. The group developed from that new beginning into a durable band: its second album, The Colour and the Shape, arrived in 1997, and the 1999 follow-up There Is Nothing Left to Lose included Learn to Fly. These records mark the shift from Grohl’s drumming role to bandleader.
Awards and continued work
Foo Fighters won their first Grammy Awards for 2000, including Best Rock Album for There Is Nothing Left to Lose. The Recording Academy records further wins in that category for One by One, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace and Wasting Light. The Rock Hall inducted Foo Fighters in 2021, giving Grohl recognition with two different bands.
