Anne Hathaway’s path from family films to dramatic roles
Television and a royal breakthrough
Anne Hathaway first drew attention in the television series Get Real in 1999. Two years later, she played Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries, a family comedy that made her widely recognizable. The role established her as a screen lead, but her next choices showed that she did not intend to remain in one kind of film.
Changing genres in the 2000s
Hathaway moved into more adult stories with Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and The Devil Wears Prada in 2006. In Rachel Getting Married, released in 2008, she played a troubled woman returning to her family; the performance earned a Golden Globe nomination. These roles gave her room to work across comedy and drama.
Musicals and later ensembles
In 2012 Hathaway appeared as Fantine in Les Misérables and won a Golden Globe for supporting actress. The same year she played Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises. Later credits include The Intern and the ensemble film Ocean’s 8, extending a career that began with teenage and family-oriented roles.
